Büyük usta Wong Kar-wai nin filmografisinde yer alan tek dövüş sanatı filmi olan Zamanın Külleri, distopya üzerine güncel düşünceleri antik dönem Çin ine uyarlayan epik bir melodram. Eleştirmenlerin fırça darbeleriyle yapılan bir tablo diyerek övdüğü ve dolaylı, simgesel bir anlatım izleyen filmin merkezinde Ouyang adında açgözlü ve kalpsiz bir adam var. Ouyang, sevdiği kadın tarafından reddedildiğinden bu yana, kendi gibi silahşörleri tutarak adam öldüren, suçluları avlayan biri haline dönüşür. Wong Kar-wai, aşk, hafıza ve ölümlülük hakkındaki bu bol ödüllü filmine 14 yıl sonra geri dönerek filmin kurgusunu yeniledi, renklerini iyileştirdi, müziğini elden geçirdi ve süresini yedi dakika kadar kısalttı. Bu redux versiyonu, ilk kez Cannes da özel bir gösterimde izleyicilerin karşısına çıktı.
